PINE FOREST
The site chosen by the customer for the construction of a family residence is in a premium village among a pine forest – stunning nature, clean air and rich infrastructure of the area were important factors when looking for a place. The main wish of the client, expressed during the discussion of the brief with AMMG Architects, was to preserve all the trees on the site, and create an image of a modern house, but close to nature and not opposed to the environment. On the territory of about 0.5 hectares, 3 buildings were to be placed – the main house, a garage with security and staff rooms, as well as a small SPA complex; the architects worked out many options before coming to the optimal solution.
The composition of the master plan was built in the form of a three-ray star, each of the rays leading to one of the buildings; thus, logistics is reduced, and a kind of central square is formed from which you can quickly reach each building. Each house is turned to its own angle, which makes the architecture more lively, plastic and subordinates it to the landscape – in fact, the buildings are turned this way not only due to the location of the surrounding trees, but also in terms of species characteristics (it was important to arrange private rooms so that they did not look out the windows to the neighbors), as well as to ensure the best possible insolation. Paths made of crushed stone were laid between the buildings, forming routes that offer the best views of the architecture of the residence.
Pitched roofs with a slight slope defined the silhouette of the buildings. The authors proposed to make intentionally long overhangs of roofs – this sets a characteristic, recognizable silhouette, and increases practicality: needles often fall off in a pine forest, and when choosing a traditional modernist building without a roof overhang, the customer would have to take care of the facades much more often. The result is a simple and at the same time spectacular composition – 3 similar volumes, different in scale and proportions – from a distance the complex is read as 3 tightly packed, dense sculptures, but on closer perception reveals complex details and elegant plastic facades. A rare Brazilian Ipe tree was chosen for the cladding of the facades – it’s warm and honey shade surprisingly harmonizes with the northern pines, and thanks to the play of light through the crowns of the trees literally dissolves the volume of the building in the forest.
The second material designed to emphasize and shade the beauty of the tree was hand-molded Belgian brick of a complex gray–brown shade - already on the site, after installation, it turned out that its color scheme almost coincides with the trunks of pine trees, which further integrated the buildings into nature. The house is emphatically open to the landscape, and this is emphasized by panoramic windows in wooden frames; the buildings seem to grow out of the plot due to the complex and stepped shape of the terraces surrounding the building. To enhance the effect, pine trees grow right through the terraces – when developing the project, special holes were initially provided for them. Balcony railings made of tinted cedar elegantly complement the facades, bringing the necessary scale to the architecture and emphasizing the horizontal rhythm of the cladding.
