SPA COMPLEX
We welcome non–standard and large-scale tasks - and one of these was the project of a private SPA complex for our workshop. As part of the residence, consisting of the main building and several guest houses, a wooden log cabin was located on the coastal site, in which a wellness area was to be equipped for the owners and guests of the residence. The scale of the building made it possible to accommodate everything necessary for rest and complete relaxation: on an area of more than 1500 sq. m. there is a swimming pool, a Russian bath and a Finnish sauna, a hammam, massage rooms, a huge two–light living room, and in the basement there is a bar, a home cinema and a large karaoke room.
The attic was equipped with a hookah and chillout zones, a second mini-bar and several guest bedrooms with their own bathrooms; despite the guest houses on the site, it was important to provide maximum comfort for guests who, after spa treatments, do not always want, especially in winter, to return to another house across the street.
We are supporters of modern architecture, and the traditionalist image of a wooden log house did not quite correspond to our aesthetic code. After long reflections on the style of the project and the search for a visual image, we offered the customer to keep the traditional shell, filling it with modern, bright solutions and design objects in contrast. Leaving the shell, graphically powerful and structural, we considered the timber walls as a pattern against which a bright and modern design will sound even more spectacular than against the background of smooth walls more familiar to modern design. The idea justified itself immediately after the first sketches — it became clear that the interior turns out to be memorable, characteristic, and charismatic, which is also important, given the status and representativeness of the complex.
Despite the clear graphic and end-to-end message, the interior is not monotonous. The main character – a chopped log – passes through the entire interior as a leitmotif, then dominating, then disappearing altogether. In the living room, bedrooms and massage rooms, timber dominates, in wet rooms such as a hammam and bathrooms are hidden behind ceramic and marble cladding. The theme of wood is supported by the decoration in the sauna and the Russian bath, whose interior is also decorated in the author's style and is remembered for the contrasting painting and cutting of massive wooden trunks. The authentic brutality of the steam rooms is replaced by a sophisticated and deliberately modernist wooden rail at the entrance to the building, against which the designer lamp looks like an unidentified alien object.
We paid special attention to the illumination in the project. Special lighting scenarios have been developed in each room, from bright and invigorating when all the lights are on, to chamber-soothing when only warm background lighting remains. The SPA philosophy is based on the contrast of relaxation, pacification, and invigorating effects, like a cold shower after a sauna; when developing the lighting project, we tried to support this idea. So, in the living room, the illumination of the ceiling beams is repeated in the rhythmic structure of the shelves of the rack, the spotlight forms the main picture, and the ring chandeliers in the bar area set a solemn atmosphere. The optical fiber on the ceiling of the hammam creates an illusion of an endless starry sky, in the sauna the heat of the stove is emphasized by the illumination of the sunbeds of a warm, almost orange color temperature; in the font, cold and seemingly bottomless water is enhanced by a wall with a print of flowing water, illuminated along the perimeter. For the comfort of guests, all bedrooms are equipped with comfortable reading sconces and local lighting in the furniture, emphasizing the beauty and geometry of shapes.
Another interesting technique was ethnic motifs, also used by us in the project. These are also Hindu motifs in massage rooms, expressed in decorative grilles, behind which there is a soft light. A warm, honey-colored tree, scattered shadows and quiet music set visitors up for a special, meditative mood. We applied a similar effect in the hookah bar, but there the mood of the lounge is different, setting up the company for a pleasant and long-term communication. Most of the built-in furniture is made according to the sketches of the studio designers to order; when choosing factory items, preference was given to top Italian brands of furniture and light. It was especially important at the design stage to work out all the elements, including custom-made furniture to the smallest detail: in a wooden house, mortgages for electrics are carried out at the stage of factory production of logs, and the slightest inaccuracy can lead to a serious error. In parallel with the interior project, we actively collaborated with specialists in automation and security systems; the synergy of efforts made it possible to carry out the project in accordance with the highest requirements for the accommodation of VIP guests.
