GRAND PLAZA
The site provided for the design is located in the Basmanny district of Moscow and comes close to the buildings of the 2nd and 3rd stages of construction of the multifunctional residential complex "Residences of Architects", closing the boulevard, landscaped as part of the 1st stage of construction of the residential complex, and connecting the Rubtsovskaya embankment of the Yauza River with Bolshaya Pochtovaya Street. The site is characterized by a slight difference in relief (about 1.2 meters with an increase from the residential complex towards B. Pochtovaya Street.)
The compositional core of the project is a square-shaped area formed at the intersection of 2 main axes identified as a result of the analysis of the initial data: the axis of the boulevard passing through the site to Bolshaya Pochtovaya Street, and the axis perpendicular to it dividing the site into 2 almost equal parts, formed additionally in continuation of the red line of the facade of the nearest two-storey office building. Around the square, the site is divided into 8 sectors, each of which is a thematic functional area:
1. Recreation area (north-western part of the site);
2. The area of continuation of the pedestrian boulevard (on the western and eastern sides of the site, on both sides of the square);
3. Landscaping area (north-eastern, south-western and south-eastern parts of the site);
4. Playground area (northern part of the site);
5. Sports activity zone in the south of the site;
6. An area in the center that connects all functional areas.
The area is highlighted by paving of clinker bricks in dark shades, repeating the decoration of the facades of part of the buildings of the "Residence of Architects", and is marked at the corners by canopies on thin metal supports. From the side of Bolshaya Pochtovaya Street, the canopies are located strictly symmetrically relative to the main axis of the boulevard and symbolize a metaphorical gate at the entrance to the territory of the residential complex, inside which there are swings and a hammock, as well as navigation elements on the territory of the residential complex. On the opposite side of the square there are smaller canopies, additionally accentuated by trees with a spherical stem crown. In the center of the square, supporting the name of the quarter, the authors placed the sculpture "Modulor" based on Le Corbusier.
The architects have provided a sports activity zone between the two main green areas. An artificial terrain separates the playground from the street, creating comfortable conditions for sports activities. The pattern of the soft surface of the sports ground is characterized by smooth shapes that continue the pattern of the paths passing through the landscaping of the lawn. A recreation area was placed in the opposite corner of the site, making it emphatically dynamic. It forms the corner of the site, becoming an important element of the square, and is welcome when moving to the site along Bolshaya Pochtovaya Street from Gastello Street. On the territory there are benches made of architectural concrete, arranged according to a downed rhythm that forms impetuosity and dynamics. The paths between the benches are divided by lawn inserts, decorative flower beds, shrubs, and trees with a spreading crown, creating shade and comfort for vacationers. The complex rhythm makes staying on the square interesting and becomes a characteristic element of landscaping.
The landscaping of the site is in 3 sectors. In the northeastern and southwestern parts of the site, an artificial relief is created with small hills covered with lawn. The relief enriches the aesthetic perception of the site, serves as a noise and visual buffer from the street and driveways, and levels the overall elevation difference. Trees with a spreading crown are planted on the slides. In the southeastern part of the site, the relief is planar and has the shape of an ellipse sector, obeying the shape of the surrounding streets. The lawn is dissected by pedestrian passageways, visually continuing the pattern of paving the boulevard and being the shortest path between the entrance to the site and the sports ground; grasses and meadow grasses, as well as small shrubs, are planted on the lawn between the passageways.
The playground consists of two main elements — two artificial slides adjacent to the landscaped terrain in the east, one of which is covered with a soft surface, the other with a lawn, on which children's slides and elements for children's play are located; and a planar part in which the playground equipment and benches for parents are located. The playground equipment includes a composition of wooden poles with rope ladders and other elements for children's games, a sandbox with a children's house, swings, and other elements for children's games. The authors used natural materials and colors in contrast to the traditional bright and typical elements that are widely used on a variety of standard playgrounds. This solution visually continues the aesthetics of the boulevard's landscaping and becomes an element of attraction for families with children.
